Applying to Korean Grad Schools | 3 min read
The first step of the admission process is gathering the information. The research on the educational environment, curriculum, and program will help you narrow down to choose which university/graduate school is the best fit. After deciding where to apply, the next step is to submit your application to the university.
The overall admission process of Korean Graduate School is as follows:
Online Application submission -> Document Screening -> Interview or Audition (if applicable) -> Result Announcement.
That being said, the very next step is submitting the application to the university. Most Korean graduate schools accept the application online, so you should check out which website to file it. Application fees (US$ 60~150) may be charged in this process. In general, the requirements are as follows:
1. Application form
2. Official graduate certificate from the undergraduate/graduate institution
3. Official transcripts from the undergraduate/graduate institution
4. Language Proficiency Certificate or Test Result (applicants should hold either Korean or English)
‼️ Please check the criteria of the university, the following is just a criteria example.
- Above TOPIK Level 3 (in the Engineering & Natural Sciences) and Level 4 (in the Humanities)
- At least TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS Academic Band Score 6.0, TEPS 551, New TEPS 298
- Students whose official language is English and their higher education entirely conducted in English can replace it with a certificate of the medium of instruction in English issued by their graduated school
5. A copy of the Statement of Purpose, the Personal Statement (if applicable)6. A copy of Passport7. Official Certificate of Family Relation8. Official copy of bank balance statement (with the balance of US$20,000)
Applicants might be asked for certain or additional documents submitted by postal mail depending on the institution. After your application is submitted, the admission office and board will review your eligibility and the decision for admission will be made based on that.
In the meantime, some universities actually require students to make contact with the supervisor before applying for graduate school. They ask you to submit the letter of confirmation of the academic advisor along with other documents. But the opposite case can also be true, so make sure to check the admission guideline of the university.
After document screening, the candidates on the shortlist will be announced. There might be an interview or an audition conducted online or offline, depending on the department or college. With the result announcement, they will notify whether or not your name is on the list of scholarship beneficiaries. Now it is close to the last stage, you need to decide which graduate school fits you.
Of course, I suppose that you avoided putting all eggs in one basket. Among the universities that you've been accepted to, pick the best fit, and proceed to make a deposit or tuition payment. It is to secure your spot, otherwise, the admission acceptance could be revoked. Upon successful enrollment, they will send you the official admission letter and guideline for the Visa Issuance. Followed by the instruction provided, get your visa issued, and then you'll find yourself being prepared to board a flight to Korea!
